Chris and Nancy Iott
Iott’s Greenhouse is a family owned business started in 1989 by Chris and Nancy Iott and their 6 children.
Our first greenhouse was a 10x12 wooden structure that Chris remodeled from an old walk in hog feeder. We grew a few annuals for friends and family. The crop that first year was such a success that we wanted to expand. During this same time the movie “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner was playing at local theaters. The theme from the movie was “If you build it he will come”. Due to our rural location, we felt a connection to this, we believed in our goal and our theme became “If we build it will they come." Our children gave up their “ball diamond” in our front yard so that we could start building our family business and our first 30 x 100 hoop house went up in 1990.
Through the years we have put up and torn down homemade wooden greenhouse structures and replaced them with more modern houses that we have torn down and hauled home from as far away as 300 miles. We have grown from a 10x12 greenhouse to our present 38,000 square feet.
Our children have grown up knowing how to dig post holes, pour cement, run a screw gun and knowing that working in a greenhouse is labor intense.
Our niche in the greenhouse market has been growing new and unusual plants, carrying the Proven Winners plant material, having unique hanging basket, planters and carrying a selection of around 500 varieties of perennials. These things plus having friendly staff and great customer service have helped us grow to having a customer mailing list of over 6000.
Our employee's are dedicated family members and close friends. Without them we wouldn't be where we are today. Our children who live locally still come and help with the greenhouse work.
Our daughter Leigh, her husband Mike, our sons Lance, Chad and his wife Michelle, and our middle daughter Sara and husband Jory, help out when they get time off from their other jobs. Our youngest daughters Stacy, along with Laura and her husband Logan help whenever they get back to S.D.
The 10 grandchildren are BONUS workers, from ages 3 to 26; they each have special jobs they can help with; from feeding the fish with Grampa to driving golf cart with Grama; and as they grow being old enough to helping with all jobs that are required to be done during the busy greenhouse season.
We enjoy our lives here, our work is rewarding and we thoroughly appreciate the smiles you share with us when you visit. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting many new in 2013.
